Planning Your Wedding Part 1: Working Together to Plan Your Big Day

Wedding planning is one of the busiest seasons in your life. (We remember; it was a busy time for us, too!) While it tends to be stressful and time-consuming, there are ways to enjoy yourselves and alleviate some of the pressure that can come along with planning for one of the most important days of your life.

Planning your wedding together can make this season fun and memorable. Even better, it gives you a chance to infuse the essence of who you are as a couple into every part of your celebration.

Here are a few ways you can plan together:

1. Split tasks and tag-team

Tag-teaming to complete planning tasks is a great way for you to cover a lot of ground. There’s so much to do, from entertainment to flowers to catering. Figure out what aspects of your wedding are most important to you, and most important to your fiance–then split responsibilities.

Each of you could take charge of decision-making for the parts of the festivities you care most about. Planning a wedding alone is a huge undertaking, so share the load, and have fun in the process.

2. Infuse the festivities with your unique personalities

Planning your wedding together gives you many opportunities to truly make the celebration your own. Put your heads together, get creative, and have fun; this is a great chance to share a little bit of yourselves with the people you love.

If you’re planning to infuse the festivities with your unique personalities, ask yourselves a few questions:

  • How can each of you add parts of yourselves into the wedding day to make it extra special?
  • Do either of you have deeply-held convictions or cultural/family traditions you want to include?
  • Could you have the ceremony on a holiday you both hold dear?
  • Can you add humor or creativity in a fresh way?
  • Do you share a quirky interest, like a fandom or historical period, that you could incorporate?
  • Do you have adventures or travel in your history together that could play a part in the big day?
  • Can you incorporate photos or home movies to share special or unique memories with your guests?

3. Keep it lighthearted

Marriage is a serious commitment, but that doesn’t mean your wedding has to be solemn. And planning it doesn’t have to be a drag! This day is about the love you have for each other, and the life you’re going to build together.

Don’t let stress, demands, or overwhelm get you down. And don’t take disagreements over preferences too seriously. Instead, keep your planning process fun and totally focused on your relationship.

Make sure the two of you take plenty of time away from the wedding plans to enjoy date nights, gatherings with friends, and more. And when it’s time to work on those plans, it’ll be a welcome activity to share together.

4. Keep the big picture in perspective

Remember that the two of you are planning a marriage–not just a wedding. At the end of this season, you may have your dream wedding, and that’s great. But if you don’t stay focused on the life you’re building after the wedding, you’ll come up short.

Marriage is for the long haul; wedding planning only lasts for a short while. As long as the two of you keep building on a solid foundation, you’ll be well on your way to lifelong love for years to come.

In part 2 of this 3-part series, we’ll explore setting and enforcing boundaries during the wedding planning process. See you then!
